Digital platforms, marketplaces, and infrastructure technology underpinning commerce across the portfolio.
Mobile-first digital adoption is reshaping how Africans transact, access services, and reach markets. We invest in platforms and infrastructure technology that support commerce, payments, and service delivery, including within our own portfolio companies.
Mobile penetration across Africa continues to outpace traditional banking and retail infrastructure, creating demand for digital marketplaces, payment rails, and service platforms that meet customers where they already are, on a mobile device. Technology infrastructure also has direct application inside our other sectors, from energy billing to agricultural supply chain coordination.
Revenue is generated through marketplace transaction commissions, subscription fees for platform access, per-transaction processing fees, and licensing of digital infrastructure to other businesses, including other companies within the Waterlight portfolio.
Smartphone penetration, mobile data affordability, and mobile-money adoption are all rising steadily across key markets, expanding the addressable base for digital platforms each year. Cross-sector application, where technology improves margins in energy, water, agriculture, and logistics businesses, adds a second growth vector beyond standalone platform revenue.
Technology carries higher margin potential and scalability than physical infrastructure alone, and it strengthens the unit economics of every other sector in our portfolio. It is the connective layer that allows the rest of the portfolio to operate more efficiently at scale.
Technology is one of seven sectors in our diversified infrastructure platform.
